“This new consulate will give much more access to consular services for Poles living in the US, in Midwest states,” said the Polish foreign policy chief at a ceremony to inaugurate the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Houston. Territorial jurisdiction of the Polish Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Houston covers the following states: Arkansas (AR), Kansas (KS), Louisiana (LA), Mississippi (MS), New Mexico (NM), Oklahoma (OK), Texas (TX).

"We hope that opening a Polish Consulate General in Houston will foster even closer relations with Texas,” underscored Minister Witold Waszczykowski. “Apart from its basic consular role and services for the large Polish diaspora in the region, the consulate will also have a number of economic, public, and cultural diplomacy tasks, including liaising with tens of US and international businesses and organizations.”

Enhancing the energy dimension of Polish-American relations, including the first gas shipment and a five-year contract for LNG shipments concluded by PGNiG, is conducive to Poland-Texas cooperation. “We expect to import as much LNG as possible, not only for us, but also for the benefit of all Three Seas Initiative’s 12 states,” said the Polish top diplomat.

“I visited the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana, from which the first LNG shipment for Central and Eastern Europe was dispatched to Swinoujcie last June,” said Minister Witold Waszczykowski. “LNG supplies from the US enhance energy security of our region, make us less dependent on the dominant supplier and bring benefits to Polish and American economies,” he emphasized.
The Houston consular district is home to around 550,000 Poles and people of Polish origin; they account for 7 percent of the entire Polish diaspora in the US (totalling over 8 million people). Texas alone has an estimated 228,000 people of Polish descent, with Polish settlement in the state going back to the mid-19th century. It is estimated that up to 50,000 Polish-born people live in Houston. “We chose Houston because it is now the fourth largest US city and one of major economic hubs in the US and in the world,” observed the MFA head.

On Sunday, the minister is meeting with the Polish-Texan diaspora members. Many Polish Americans living in Texas are linked to the extraction and oil industries. Polish scholars do research at the universities in Houston and Austin. A large number of physician-scientists have outstanding achievements working at medical facilities, including Houston Methodist Hospital, the biggest cardiology hospital in the US, and MD Anderson, one of the leading cancer treatment and research centres.
